People who are not used to exercise often find it hard to motivate themselves to take those first steps to improving their fitness. However, this is seldom the case for those of us who love exercising. This leads to the question: Why are people so different when it comes to their attitudes towards exercise?
The answer lies in the mind.
Whenever you exercise hard enough, the pituitary gland at the base of your brain releases endorphins to reward your body and give you a sensation of well-being.
If you don’t exercise or do it only once in a while, your brain will release stress hormones instead.
As a result, you will age more rapidly. It’s like speaking a foreign language – if you speak it only rarely, it will be difficult to hold a conversation.
I like to call this the phenomenon of building up – or alternatively, discarding – “human rust”.
If you would like to get rid of this rust, remind yourself to exercise regularly. Here are some good ways to get yourself going:
1. Imagine it. Before you start exercising, picture yourself doing it with ease. Take a few deep breaths and visualize air filling your lungs and delivering oxygen to every muscle in your body.
2. Feel it. Do not hesitate to move your body whenever you have the chance. Think about feeling comfortable during exercise. Imagine yourself moving powerfully, effortlessly and confidently through a run, walk, cycle ride or fitness class.
3. Bring your imagination, feelings and thoughts together every time you exercise.
These simple tips can help turn a tedious exercise session into a fun experience. They will also help you shed that human rust.
Many people come up with excuses for not being physically active – the most common excuse being that they don’t have enough time.
Another is that their daily work schedule is hectic enough already. But I would like to offer these thoughts:
First, if you have time to breathe, you have time to exercise.
Second, just do it. Do not hesitate or procrastinate any longer.
You don’t need a special time or place in which to exercise if you really want to do it.
While at work, you can tighten your biceps, triceps or even chest and abdominal muscles. Just tightening your muscles can burn calories. This technique can be used as an adjunct to regular exercise if you do not have time for prolonged sessions. Exercise is not as hard as you think as long as you know such anti-aging tips and tools.
Now is the time to get up and brush off your rust!
